Congratulations to Sean McCollum, who has been awarded a Research Assistantship from the FSU William R. and Lenore Mote Endowment! Sean will be researching how nutrient enrichment impacts the ability of seagrass meadows to sequester carbon in their sediments. Under nutrient enrichment, seagrasses alter their chemistry to include greater proportions of limiting nutrients, which can modify the decomposition of deposited biomass. Decomposition is a key process in carbon sequestration and determines the proportion of deposited biomass that is ultimately sequestered. Sean's research will study the influence of seagrass biomass chemical content on decomposiiton in order to better understand how nutrient enrichment will impact seagrass meadow ecosystem services.
