In this paper, we characterized genetic and physiological differences in algal and bacterial assemblages associated with cyanobacterial tufts and algal turf on the coral reefs of the Florida Keys. We found surprising similarity between these assemblages given the different ecological roles attributed to each substrate on coral reefs.
