Schyler Ellsworth (Postdoc) and Madeline Marquez (PhD Candidate) have recently published a paper in Ecology and Evolution from their work on cyanobacterial mats from North Carolina. Below is the short description of the paper and the open access link for the paper that was published this month. "We characterized and compared the bacterial community within intertidal and supratidal cyanobacterial mats from barrier islands in North Carolina across small horizontal and vertical spatial scales. We found that vertical layers within these stratified mats varied in their community composition and diversity together with nutrients and isotopic signatures and identified key taxa linked to these stratifications.”  https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.72894

Its fascinating how microbial communities vary vertically in cyanobacterial mats—this could have big implications for understanding ecosystem functions. heartopia database
